Cold Fresh Water… With Ice

IMG_1967When our twin girls were small, they would call us into their bedroom shortly after bedtime and ask for “cold fresh water, with ice.” It was a stall tactic. Like many preschoolers, they worked hard to stretch the day out as long as possible.

Today they headed off for their last day of their junior year of high school.

Most nights I am in bed asleep long before they are even thinking of getting a glass of water for bedtime, but I still get the girls cold fresh water with ice. Now, it is in the morning before school. It is still a stall tactic; a way of briefly putting off the start to the day.

On top of getting them water at a different time, instead of getting them milk and juice, I now brew extra coffee so they can have iced coffee. Instead of lining up play dates, we help them fill out applications for summer jobs. And, instead of checking out new parks to play in, we go on college tours.

I love watching them become who they are – each one unique; each one with her own strengths; each with her own interests and passions; each with so many possibilities in front of her. So, I will keep bringing them cold fresh water with ice. It is a stall tactic; one designed to stretch out the next year as long as possible. I am not sure that it will work, but know that I have to try.
